Bracing, explained like you are at the bar
Posted in Technique. 1 minute read.
Big breath, belly out, hold it. That is most of it.
A mate asked me what bracing actually means. I gave him a long answer about pressure and spines. He looked at me like I had grown a second head. So here is the short version.
The pub version
Take a big breath into your belly. Not your chest, your belly. Now push your belly out in every direction, like someone is about to poke you in the stomach. Hold that. Do the rep. Breathe out at the top.
If your shoulders rise when you breathe in, you are breathing into the wrong place.
The first time I did it properly, 140 felt like 130. I am not exaggerating much.
