Film your squat from the side, not the front

Posted in Technique. 1 minute read.

The front angle looks good on TikTok. The side angle tells you what is going wrong.

A phone propped on a plate filming a squat rack from the side

Every gym video online is shot from the front or from behind. Great for showing off. Useless for checking your form.

Where the phone goes

Side on, at hip height, about three metres away. Lean it against a plate or a water bottle. Get your whole body and the full bar in the frame.

What to look for

  1. The bar should travel in a straight line over the middle of your foot.
  2. Your hips and chest should rise at the same speed out of the bottom.
  3. Depth: hip crease below the top of the knee.

My most common fault is the second one. When I get tired, my hips shoot up and I end up good morning the weight. Seeing it on video fixed it faster than any cue.
